The PWP Discover Series brings together leading physicians, health care professionals, researchers, and the Parkinson’s Disease care team of each hospital system to speak about their best practices and health concerns. These top-tier specialists will share their knowledge and expertise on best strategies for staying well and leading a healthier life. Each healthcare system will discuss themes of their choice.

Dr. Jimenez-Shahed is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Medical Director, Movement Disorders Neuromodulation and Brain Circuit Therapeutics.  After completing her undergraduate degree at Washington University in St. Louis, she received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and Neurology residency training at Duke University Medical Center. She then completed a fellowship in Movement Disorders at the Parkinson’s Disease Center and Movement Disorders Clinical (PDCMDC) at BCM. Her clinical focus is on the evaluation and management of adults and children with movement disorders, with particular focus on the use of deep brain stimulation, focused ultrasound and botulinum toxin injections.

Her research investigates the neurophysiologic features of movement disorders recorded during deep brain stimulation (DBS), the application of wearables and digital health technologies, and health outcomes research.  She is the lead investigator for the Registry for the Advancement of Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson’s disease, a multi-center quality improvement patient registry whose pilot period was funded by the Michael J Fox Foundation. She is also an investigator with the TSA International Database of DBS Studies in Tourette syndrome, and has served as Principal Investigator for industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated clinical trials and has authored several papers and book chapters.

Dr. Jimenez-Shahed currently serves as the Chair of the Science Advisory Board of the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinson's  and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Parkinson Study Group, where she also serves as Chair of the Mentorship Committee and past co-chair of the Functional Neurosurgical Working Group. She is a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the Tourette Association of America, and has chaired the Medical Advisory Board for the Houston Area Parkinson Society.

She is the recipient of the Roy H. Cullen Quality of Life Award (Houston Area Parkinson Society), the Rising Star Clinician Award (BCM), the Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching and Evaluation (BCM) and the Healthcare Heroes Award for Outstanding Health Care Practitioner (Houston Business Journal). She was recognized as a Woman of Excellence at BCM and is a graduate of the inaugural Women Leading in Neurology program of the American Academy of Neurology.

Dr. Miravite’s professional career is rooted in addressing quality of care for patients and families with movement disorders, specifically Parkinson’s disease.  Twenty-three years of clinical expertise as an NP and expert Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) programmer has allowed her to improve the quality of life of patients with disabling and advanced movement disorders internationally. Dr Miravite serves as Clinical Coordinator of the Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence and was appointed Director of Interdisciplinary Clinical Care for Movement Disorders at Mount Sinai Beth Israel.  Dr. Miravite has built a strong DBS program at Mount Sinai Beth Israel by educating nurses, doctors, and patients about DBS. She is heavily involved in training Movement Disorder fellows, neurology residents, medical students, and nurse practitioner (NP) students on management of patients with movement disorders and DBS techniques.

She has published over 20 peer reviewed articles and presented nationally on DBS programming and management.  She also published a clinical practice guideline Care of the Movement Disorder Patient with Deep Brain Stimulation and a chapter on Movement Disorders for the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses. She presents both nationally and internationally regarding the management of patients with PD and on DBS throughout their continuum. Joan also contributed to the Michael J. Fox Foundation Guide to DBS, which has been shared with over one million social media followers and emailed to more than 900,000 subscribers. 

Dr. Miravite advocates for health care equity for patients with movement disorders and the Advance Practice Provider (APP) role at the national level. As the elected Chair for the American Academy of Neurology Consortium of Neurology APPs, she represents over 1,900 clinicians across the country.  She collaborates on multiple advisory boards and partners with APPs nationally on mentorship, recruitment, and networking. 

She is an invited member of the international Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence Advisory Group. Additionally, she serves as core faculty for the Parkinson’s Foundation Team Training program, an international multidisciplinary training program for clinicians. As faculty for a foundation and three academic institutions, she guides and mentors interprofessional advanced practitioners on the replication of evidence-based practices and scalable patient centered care models.  She is also collaborating to develop a new educational program for community-based healthcare providers who lack knowledge about PD but provide primary care services in medically underserved areas throughout the US. 

She has won multiple awards for clinical practice, mentorship, and advocacy, including the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Practitioner State Award for Excellence from New York in2021. She was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 2022 and became a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners in 2023.

Dr. Shannon O’Neill joined the Center for Advanced Circuit Therapeutics (C-ACT) and the Department of Psychiatry in 2019. Within her C-ACT position, Dr. O’Neill provides pre-/post-surgical psychological assessments and ongoing psychotherapy to patients implanted with deep brain stimulation (DBS). Primary diagnoses treated within this role include neurological movement disorders (Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, essential tremor), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Tourette syndrome (TS), and major depressive disorder (MDD). Additional patient-populations served are those receiving other neuromodulation interventions (e.g., spinal cord stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, and transcranial magnetic stimulation) to help manage symptoms of chronic pain, epileptic seizures, OCD, and MDD.

Dr. O’Neill received her doctoral degree from Fordham University at Lincoln Center and is now credentialed as a National Register Health Service Psychologist. She completed an American Psychological Association accredited internship and fellowship within the VA Healthcare System. Through comprehensive training, she specialized in health psychology and has implemented therapeutic services across a diverse array of psychological/medical pathology. Dr. O’Neill is highly trained in completing pre-surgical psychological evaluations, medical psychology consultations, and delivering individual/group therapy to patients diagnosed with chronic medical conditions. Training within the VA Healthcare System led to Dr. O’Neill’s national certification as a cognitive processing therapy (CPT) provider, which is a trauma-processing therapy offered to those suffering with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She also has extensive, specialty training in cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) to aid with sleep-related concerns.

Dr. O’Neill has expertise in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as well as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), implementing these evidence-based services across a range of psychopathology (OCD, MDD, generalized anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, PTSD, etc.). Proficiency was further fostered with training at the iconic Beck Institute for CBT. Through previous experience within Mount Sinai’s Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders Program, Dr. O’Neill has in-depth knowledge of exposure and response prevention (ERP) as well as habit reversal training (HRT). Complimentary to these behavioral treatments, she is also a national certified provider of comprehensive behavioral intervention for tics (CBIT) therapy recognized by the Tourette Association of America.

Dr. O’Neill has recently appeared on NY1WCBS-TV, WABC, and PBS as well as actively contributes to several magazines, including New York MagazineSELF, Well + Good, Health, INSIDER, and Allure.
